Merchants on Long
So my part-time work for Match My Bag.com has been going really well; I’ve slacked a little lately (bad intern!), but I have a plan in place to help me pick up the pace again. And now *drumroll please*: I am a sales assistant! [Cue the trumpets. :)] I have bagged the most hated valuable position in the fashion industry (in terms of experience and knowledge, that is), and I’ve done it at the just-about-famous African luxury goods store, Merchants on Long in Cape Town. Initially I took the job on for a project on the retail environment, but they happened to be looking for someone to join the staff, and I happen to be a student who could use the extra cash. It was literally a match made in heaven.
Owned by Hanneli Rupert, Merchants on Long is a store that sources and sells some of the the best fashion and accessories made in Africa by designers from all around the globe, as well as African fragrances, stationery, and even chocolate (it’s sooo good). It’s at #34 Long Street in one of Cape Town’s oldest and most characteristic buildings - it’s a space you have to see for yourself. [Side Note: if you’re in Cape Town, swing by; we have a hectic sale going on!] The store’s been doing some major PR, with features in international publications like British Vogue (about the pop up store Hanneli recently set up called Merchants in London), Italian Vogue, and Tatler.
